The NAUTICAL DIPLOMATES ASSOCIATION was found taking into consideration over the suggestions made by nautical diploma holders, to form an association which is very own to nautical diplomats in University of Moratuwa.The inaugural meeting of the NDA was held on 25th of May 2003 in the nautical studies building in the University of Moratuwa.

The very first office bearers of the association were

President Mr.D.K.S.T.Delgoda

Secratary Late Mr.U.D.N.Chandralal

Treasurer Mrs.Chamila Dias.

Thereafter NDA family gathers lead its way to reach the aims & objectives of Nautical Diplomats.

 

History of Nautical Studies & Technology

The diploma of nautical studies & technology was established in University of moratuwa in year 1987, under a project of United Nations developing fund (UNDP). The supporting parties were International maritime organization (IMO) & Sri Lankan shipping ministry.
                   The main objective of this program is to produce a qualified deck officer for that ITUM; university of Moratuwa conducts a three year diploma course which contains two years of academic work & one year of sea training which is provided in cooperation with Ceylon shipping cooperation.
                   After successfully completion of diploma Course University issues the diploma certificate which will eventually pave the way for the students for class three certification levels. On receiving the class three certificate it is allowed to work as 2nd officer in any type of merchant navy vessel.
                   Capt. Alexander Simpson was the IMO agent of Sri Lanka to prepare the nautical studies syllabus according the IMO standards while IMO facilitate with instructions & teacher training programs.
                   This is the only national program conducting in Sri Lanka under free education system.
                   Ceylon shipping cooperation was the first to conduct a deck cadet training program in Sri Lanka with onboard training in vessel Lanka Kalyani. But after company sold the vessel the the training program eventually transformed in to the nautical diploma course, university of moratuwa.

The basic requirements to be meet follow the nautical studies

  • Minimum three passes in advanced level examination in mathematic stream  
  • Pass the written examination conduct by university of moratuwa
  • Pass the physical test
  • Pass the medical test held in moratuwa university
  • Special attention will be paid for candidates below 20 years of age
